Alberta has the potential to lead Canada’s clean energy transition, and a growing number of hydrogen mobility pilot projects are demonstrating the province’s unique advantages. In this webinar, experts from AMTA and the City of Calgary provided a comprehensive update on hydrogen mobility pilots interfacing with Calgary, including:

  • AMTA AZETEC Pilot: Progress and lessons learned from the heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell truck project assessing the Calgary–Edmonton transportation corridor.
  • Calgary Green Fleets Pilot: How the City is exploring hydrogen integration in municipal fleets, with current status and objectives.
  • Calgary Transit Bus Pilot: Insights into the proposed pilot to test hydrogen fuel-cell technology in Calgary transit applications.

The session concluded with a discussion on the fuelling infrastructure required to scale these initiatives in the Calgary region—addressing near-term hurdles to adoption and strategies to make infrastructure efficient, reliable, and impactful.

Zak Cunningham

Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub Lead, The Transition Accelerator

Zachary (Zak) Cunningham holds an MSc in Sustainable Energy Development from the University of Calgary, a B.Eng (Hons) in Petroleum Engineering, and a diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology. Zak began his career in the oil and gas industry in the field, having spent extensive time on drilling and workover rigs in Western Canada and deepwater offshore in Malaysia in various roles, leading him to spend nearly a decade living overseas in Southeast Asia. Zak strongly connects with his Métis culture and the Métis community within Alberta and is particularly interested in sustainable energy development in remote Northern communities.

speakers/panelists:

Brian Lee, P.Eng.

Engineering Business Strategists, Fleet Transition, Calgary Transit Service Vehicles

Brian is a professional engineer passionate about energy systems, renewable energy, sustainability practices and zero emission transportation. His work experience includes program development, solar PV development, green buildings, building certification, energy benchmarking, project management and transit projects. Brian earned his Civil Engineering degree at the University of Calgary, specializing in energy and environment.

Philippa Wagner

Green Fleet Program Manager, Fleet & Inventory, City of Calgary

Philippa Wagner has over 25 years of municipal government environmental and program management experience. Many of those years were in municipal waste management, where she implemented and managed residential waste diversion programs, including leading the implementation of Calgary’s green cart program in 2017. After that highlight, she decided to explore other ways to green municipal services. She managed the public-private partnership agreement for Calgary Transit’s Stoney Transit Facility, a LEED Gold building, before moving into Fleet & Inventory in 2023. In her current role as Green Fleet Program Manager, Philippa is applying her passion for environmental stewardship to lead the implementation of The City of Calgary’s Green Fleet Strategy.

Terri Johnson

Manager of Industry Advancement, Alberta Motor Transport Association

Terri Johnson is the Manager of Industry Advancement at the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA), and she plays a key role in AMTA’s efforts to advance hydrogen-powered vehicles and infrastructure. She’s involved in projects like the Alberta Zero Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC), which focuses on developing and operating heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Additionally, she’s working on the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Development (EVID) project, which aims to build and operate Alberta’s first hydrogen fueling station for heavy-duty vehicles.
