About

The Calgary Region is superbly positioned to take a leadership role in transitioning to a vibrant hydrogen economy

The world’s energy systems are evolving. While much of that transition is being driven by electrification, there are no silver bullets when it comes to addressing the world’s energy needs. Chemical energy carriers, including hydrogen, will play a role in our future energy system, even as uncertainty remains about the exact functions they’ll fill and the full scale of the opportunity.

Estimates of the size of the future hydrogen market vary widely, with the federal Hydrogen Strategy for Canada estimating hydrogen “could lead to more than 350,000 sector jobs and direct revenues of over $50B/year by 2050”. As Canada’s largest hydrogen producer, Alberta is well-placed to take a leading role in this emerging economy—and the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub is helping to identify the conditions needed for success.

our objectives

Help define an economically viable future hydrogen economy in the Calgary region

Assist in aggregating and connecting regional hydrogen demand with supply

Accelerate pilots and projects along the hydrogen value chain

The Hub Approach

Developing a sustainable hydrogen economy means more than updating existing infrastructure. Building a value chain from the ground up calls for coordination:

  • Producers need to be able to connect with the businesses and end users that will drive demand.
  • Industry and government need to work together to understand challenges and align on solutions.

To build knowledge and create connections to support the growth of the sector, the CRH2’s insights and analysis will be freely accessible by the public.

What We Do

  • Conduct independent, data-driven analytics to understand where hydrogen makes sense, where it might not, and how to bridge the gaps
  • Recruit expert advisors to learn from industry leaders, uncover opportunities, prioritize actions, and leverage real-world experience
  • Host events, webinars, and workshops to create connections along the value chain

What We Don’t

  • Directly develop, launch, or operate projects
  • Greenlight or endorse projects
  • Provide funding or tailored advice
  • Give a competitive advantage to select individuals or companies
  • Give out fancy membership cards—there is no ‘in’ or ‘out’ of the Hub!
