Focus Areas

Understanding the most economically promising uses for hydrogen will take time and careful analysis of real-world results. The CRH2 is working with established and emerging industries to identify challenges and opportunities in six promising areas for early hydrogen adoption, and to provide the insights needed to make a hydrogen economy into a reality.

Airports

With ground fleet duty cycles requiring nearly 100% uptime and close connections to other modes of transport infrastructure, the unique needs of airports could be met through hydrogen technology.

Heat & Power

Hydrogen blending for heat and power may be a promising pathway to reduce emissions and build hydrogen demand in the short to medium term, especially in cases like district heating.

Hydrogen Corridors

Once municipal hubs are established, the next step is connecting them through hydrogen corridors. Collaboration between cities can enable a shift from return-to-base operations to more varied duty cycles.

Industrial fleets

Canadian trucks deal with heavier loads and longer distances than many international peers, making heavy-duty ground transport one of the most promising candidates for early hydrogen adoption.

Municipal fleets

Long duty cycles and frigid temperatures are a challenge when it comes to electrifying municipal bus fleets. Hydrogen fuel cells may hold more promise for powering through prairie winters.

Trains

The most compelling use cases for hydrogen involve moving very heavy things for very long distances. The CRH2 is ready to support Calgary’s local leadership in the freight train industry.
