Launching the Calgary Region's Hydrogen Economy
The Calgary region is ready for the next stage of its energy economy. As nations race to establish low- and non-emitting industries, hydrogen is projected to play an increasing role in powering our low-carbon future. With the launch of the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub, Canada’s energy capital is positioning itself to take part in a global hydrogen market that Alberta’s Hydrogen Roadmap notes could grow to US$700 billion annually by mid-century.
To seize this opportunity, we’re working closely with industry partners to identify economic opportunities, coordinate research and initiatives, and overcome barriers to a self-sustaining hydrogen ecosystem. Through in-depth analysis, strategic insights, and events connecting Calgary’s hydrogen innovators, we’re building on the region’s strengths to secure a competitive future in a world moving to reduce its emissions.
The Hydrogen Horizon: Where We Are and Where We’re Headed
Join us for a candid conversation on the real state of hydrogen, globally and within Alberta. We’ll explore why some major initiatives are stalling and what sound technical analysis can do to help address risks—and we’ll share how the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub’s goals and methodology can contribute to our practical path forward.
The
Opportunity
Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in the world’s future energy system, especially in industries without a promising pathway to electrification. The need for low-carbon hydrogen represents a tremendous opportunity, one the federal Hydrogen Strategy for Canada estimates “could lead to more than 350,000 sector jobs and direct revenues of over $50B/year by 2050” across the country.
The Calgary region alone has been projected to have a potential hydrogen demand of over 5,000 tonnes per day, or $4.6 billion in sales annually, based on scenarios in Towards a Fuel Hydrogen Economy in the Calgary Region. As Canada’s largest hydrogen producer, Alberta is well-placed to take a leading role in this emerging economy—and the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub is laying the foundation for success.

The REGION
Building a self-sustaining hydrogen economy will require the resources and skilled workforce to produce low-carbon, cost-competitive hydrogen, and the innovative industries that will build up demand and create economies of scale. The Calgary region is ready to deliver on all fronts.
OUR
ADVANTAGES
Location
Workforce
Calgary’s energy workforce is young, highly educated, and ready to tackle the challenges of building a hydrogen economy.
Innovation
Ranked among the top 50 ecosystems globally on Startup Genome’s Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems list, Calgary is built on bold ideas and entrepreneurial spirit.
Resources
Energy and Calgary go hand in hand, positioning us to lead in a hydrogen ecosystem.
Network
With over 100 corporate head offices—the most per capita in Canada—the Calgary region has the connections to move major projects from ideas to execution.
The Hub
The CRH2 will connect the region’s hydrogen ecosystem, enhancing collaboration between Alberta’s hydrogen producers and the businesses and facilities that will act as demand centres for consumption. Our expert advisory teams bring together leaders from the industries with the potential to anchor a viable hydrogen economy to coordinate research and initiatives, facilitate application of hydrogen solutions and overcome barriers to hydrogen development.
To support the growth of our hydrogen sector, the Hub’s insights and analysis will be freely accessible, and our in-person and online events will encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing. With an initial focus on airports, heat and power, hydrogen corridors, industrial and municipal fleets, and trains, we’re working to hone the competitive edge that will help the region succeed.
